Assalammu'alaikum

Hi, I'm not sure where to put this topic, so I put it in Chit Chat.
Anyway, I'm 17, high school student, Indonesian

So, I'm not wearing hijab currently, but I want to wear it when I got to university, which is next year.

My problem is that I am not too confident with this. I'm aiming to go to Australia for university, and you know, I'm just afraid people will avoid me if I wear hijab. I really hope it'd not happen. But what if?

Okay, that's not my main problem. The main problem is that my family is not a family that, you know, into religion. Most of the girls dont wear hijab. Only my mom, my two aunts and a few others. If I wear hijab next year, I'll be the youngest who wear it. You know, I'm just not confident if I have to meet them and then they give me those strange looks. Can you help me with these, please? Maybe share your experience?

Firstly I'd like to say well done for making the choice to wear the Hijab and good luck with University
I can understand that you may be a little under confident wearing your Hijab, but I don't see why people would avoid you? Lots of people I know wear the Hijab and they have never been avoided. The way your dress shouldn't be the reason why people people want to talk to you, it should be about the kind of person you are and the personality you have. If you do come across certain people then I think you should be quick to realise that genuine people don't care how you dress, what religion you are etc, they just accept you for who you are. So I wouldn't worry to much about these kind of people.

Secondly, the girls in your family don't wear the Hijab and your under confident in meeting them with it on? Again, I can understand your feelings, but I don't think that you should be feeling like this because your not doing anything wrong or shameful, you doing something which is pleasing to Allah (SWT) so it doesn't really matter if you get 'strange looks' because your doing something which you will Insha'Allah be rewarded for

Maybe you should try putting scarf around your head loose (no pins) to begin with so that you and others can get use to you having your head covered. Once you feel comfortable with this then I would be wise to wear the Hijab properly.

Wow thankyou so much for your reply! You are right. People shouldnt avoid others just because they way they dress. I'm feeling a bit more confident now Thank you so much once again.

However I'm still thinking about my family. I hope it'll all be okay....... I mean, my parents support me, so I hope it'd make it easier.

If you want to wear hijab, there must be a reason. Something pushing you to make that step. Just find that and let it be your one goal. Try and ignore any other worries you have and focus on what you want. Tell yourself that no one can get in the way of what you want.

Also - if you're into fashion, try and make hijab relative to that. Match it with outfits etc. See it as an accessory of sorts too.

I am also practising wearing the hijab at the moment, and to be honest, I'm not very bothered about what other people think/say. Becuase at the end of the day you are wearing the hijab for Allah (swt) so whatever they think of you shouldn't matter

Also, plan a shopping trip with another Muslim friend! I did it once, and you can mix and match your hijab's with outfit and it really makes you a lot more confident!

I've also read "Does My Head Look Big In This" and it's a really good down to eartch kinda book. Also check out "Love In A Headscarf" thas a pretty good read.
